A woman in New Zealand has been detained after authorities found her traveling with a two-year-old girl confined inside her suitcase.
A concerned bus driver alerted the police after noticing a bag moving at a bus stop in Kaiwaka, located 62 miles north of Auckland.
Detective Inspector Simon Harrison stated that the 27-year-old mother faces charges of ill-treatment and child neglect.
“Upon opening the suitcase, the driver found the two-year-old girl,” Harrison reported.
“While the child was discovered to be very hot, she did not appear to have any physical injuries.”
The suitcase was placed in a compartment separate from the passenger seating, according to the police.
Harrison said the toddler is in hospital undergoing medical assessment.
The woman is due to appear in North Shore District Court on August 4.
