Man, 44, stabbed in back in unprovoked attack on staircase of NYC subway station: cops

A 44-year-old man was stabbed in the back during an apparently random attack late Wednesday on a staircase at a Brooklyn subway station, police said.

The assault happened around 9:20 p.m. on the steps leading into the Sutter Avenue-Rutland Road station in Brownsville, according to authorities.

Police said the attacker, who was described as wearing jeans and work boots, approached from behind and stabbed the victim without saying anything. Investigators do not believe the two men knew each other.

The injured subway rider was transported to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was reported to be in stable condition, officials said.

The suspect remained at large hours after the stabbing, authorities said.

The incident occurred roughly a week after the NYPD reported that major crime across the city’s subway system had fallen by about 1% compared with the same period last year.

Felony assaults in the transit system, however, were up by 20 incidents through June, according to department data.

The NYPD also said felony assault arrests on subways increased 9% during the first six months of the year.
