Record-breaking ferris wheel will be part of $500M LA Waterfront District project

Los Angeles is set to unveil a towering addition to its skyline with the introduction of a colossal ferris wheel, which will crown the new multi-million dollar waterfront project as the tallest in California.

Standing at an impressive 175 feet, this ferris wheel is part of the ambitious $500 million West Harbor development, slated to open this summer in the Port of Los Angeles, nestled within San Pedro’s South Bay neighborhood.

Offering breathtaking views, this giant attraction promises passengers an unrivaled panoramic experience, showcasing the harbor, the iconic Vincent Thomas Bridge, and the historic USS Iowa. With enclosed seating, it ensures a comfortable ride throughout the year.

This new wheel will surpass the current tallest ferris wheel in the state, which stands at 100 feet and is a beloved feature of Southern California’s Santa Monica Pier.

The Pacific Wheel on Santa Monica Pier, known for its thrilling ocean views from over 130 feet above, currently holds the title. According to its website, the wheel measures 85 feet in diameter and rotates at 2.5 revolutions per minute, pausing intermittently to allow passengers to board and disembark.

“Measuring 85 feet, the wheel moves at 2.5 revolutions per minute with intermittent stops to pick up passengers.”

The West Harbor Wheel, once completed, will stand 50% taller than the Santa Monica one.

“The West Harbor Wheel and park will become an iconic feature of the West Harbor project,” Todd Schneider, managing partner of SkyView Partners, told the outlet. 

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring this level of family-fun, grandkids-to-grandparents excitement to San Pedro and the Los Angeles area.”

The development brings 300,000 square feet and will offer visitors tons of attractions including retail, dining and entertainment, transforming what was once the old Ports O’ Call Village into a vibrant coastal destination.

Additional highlights include an expanded San Pedro Fish Market, padel and pickleball courts, bike rentals and harbor cruises.

The sprawling 42-acre district, along one full mile of waterfront, is a massive undertaking to transform the waterfront area into a venue that will also offer a place to host concerts with a new 6,200-seat oceanfront amphitheater, poised to become one of California’s premier live music hubs.

The amphitheater, which will be operated by Nederlander Concerts, kicks off its programming this summer by hosting an official Los Angeles World Cup 26 Fan Zone for FIFA World Cup fans.

The California Post reached out to the Port of Los Angeles for further comment.
