ABC's 'World News Tonight' anchor David Muir honored by Temple University

PHILADELPHIA — Temple University recently hosted a celebration honoring outstanding achievements in journalism, marking a memorable evening in Philadelphia.

At the heart of the event was the presentation of the 2025 Lew Klein Excellence in Media Award, which was bestowed upon David Muir, the anchor and managing editor of “World News Tonight.”

Debra OConnell, President of ABC News Group and Disney Entertainment Networks, had the honor of presenting this esteemed award to Muir.

During his acceptance speech, Muir emphasized the importance of mentorship and paving the way for future generations, saying, “I think it’s so important that we all in this room remember to look behind us and make sure the door is open for the next person to come through.”

Muir took the opportunity to inspire budding journalists in attendance with his remarks.

“There is no time more important to be a journalist in our country than right now,” he stated. “Let the viewers at home listen to the facts, hear the truth and decide for themselves, and in that way, you will be a success before you even know it.”

Reporter Beccah Hendrickson, from our sister station, 6ABC in Philadelphia, was also recognized as a rising star by her alma mater.

“My career is just beginning, just like a lot of the students here, and to be honored by Temple – the place that gave me my start – means so much to me,” Hendrickson said.

In addition, 6abc President and General Manager Bernie Prazenica, a Temple alum and past award recipient, was recognized for his leadership and contributions to Klein College.

“Bernie has poured his heart into Klein College, serving on our Board of Visitors, making opportunities for our students, both in employment as well as internships,” said Deborah Cai, the acting dean of the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication.

Earlier in the day, Muir visited Temple’s campus to meet with journalism students, encouraging them to stay true to their principles, meet viewers where they are, and seek common ground.

“The true highlight of my day here was going to the Klein school and meeting the young journalists who are going to take up this extraordinary discipline,” Muir said.
