According to his booking agent, John Alcantar, Tolkan died on Thursday in Lake Placid, New York, where he had been residing. A concise obituary on the “Back to the Future” website noted that Tolkan’s passing was peaceful, though the specific cause remains undisclosed.

In the beloved “Back to the Future” series, Tolkan took on the role of Vice Principal Gerald Strickland, a stern disciplinarian at the fictional Hill Valley High School. He was particularly focused on keeping an eye on Marty McFly, portrayed by Michael J. Fox.

One of Tolkan’s memorable lines from the 1985 film is directed at McFly: “You got a real attitude problem, McFly. You’re a slacker. You remind me of your father when he went here. He was a slacker, too.”

Tolkan also left a mark with his performance in “Top Gun,” where he played the authoritative Commander Tom “Stinger” Jardian. In a notable scene towards the movie’s conclusion, when Stinger inquires about Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’s (Tom Cruise) future plans, Mitchell expresses his desire to become a Top Gun instructor.

With a chuckle, Tolkan’s character responds, “God help us,” capturing the spirit of the film with humor and wit.

Born in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan graduated from high school in Arizona and served in the Navy during the Korean War. He eventually made his way to New York, where he spent a quarter century acting in theater roles. He was a member of the original ensemble cast of “Glengarry Glen Ross.”

Tolkan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Parmelee Welles, who said in a statement that her husband also was an avid art collector and adored animals.
