Alabama correctional officer charged with drug crimes

ODENVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) — An Alabama correctional officer was arrested Thursday and charged with drug crimes.

The Alabama Department of Corrections reported that their law enforcement division carried out a search warrant at a home in Odenville. According to the ADOC, narcotics officers discovered the following substances:

  • Methamphetamine – 8.87 pounds
  • Promethazine liquid – 350 grams
  • Synthetic cannabinoid – 340 grams
  • Oxycodone pills – Nine
  • Sprayed paper – 326 grams
  • Cell phones – 156
  • Cellular hotspots – Two
  • Marijuana – 19 pounds
  • Crack cocaine – 100 grams
  • Cocaine powder – 16 grams
  • Flakka precursor powder – 610 grams

In a connected raid, authorities seized 2.5 pounds of marijuana and 60 grams of methamphetamine. Calvin Bush, a lieutenant with the St. Clair Correctional Facility, was arrested and is now on mandatory leave as he faces termination.

According to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, Bush faces charges for promoting prison contraband and trafficking both fentanyl and marijuana. His bond has been set at $3.01 million.

The ADOC mentioned that the investigation is targeting individuals suspected of smuggling illegal drugs and contraband into the St. Clair County prison. They are actively working to uncover more participants in the unlawful activities.

“This operation highlights our ongoing dedication to combating the smuggling of illegal drugs and contraband into our prisons,” stated ADOC Commissioner John Hamm. “The presence of illegal drugs significantly influences prison violence.”
