A mushroom-foraging trip on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula took a frightening turn earlier this month when a black bear attacked a woman’s dog near Skilak Lake.
Lori Price said she was out walking on June 7 with her two dogs, a German short-haired pointer named Chaos and a chocolate Labrador named Willis, when the encounter unfolded without warning.
Speaking to Alaska News Source, Price said she heard a roar and instantly understood that a bear had come into contact with her dogs.
“I heard the bear and I registered what was going on,” Price said. “My sudden reaction was, I have to get to my dog now.”
Price said that when she saw Chaos under attack, she pulled the Glock 43 9mm pistol she was carrying and fired at the bear, an action she believes saved the dog’s life.
