A Scottsdale man allegedly opened fire at an apartment complex after residents declined his offer to use cocaine with him, authorities said.
Samuel Ellery Sedgwick, 49, was arrested after police received reports that 10 shots had been fired Thursday morning at an apartment community near Miller and Osborn roads.
According to court documents reviewed by FOX 10, Sedgwick appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance when he offered cocaine to residents. After they refused, he allegedly called their decision “offensive to his culture” and began assaulting a man.
A second person, fearing the victim might be killed, reportedly grabbed a claw hammer and struck Sedgwick twice in the face. Sedgwick then allegedly drew a firearm, threatened to kill everyone present, struck the injured man with the gun and fled.
Sedgwick returned to his nearby apartment, where he reportedly became enraged after looking in the mirror and discovering that one of his teeth had been chipped.
He later rode his bicycle back to the apartment complex and fired 10 rounds. A bullet pierced a parking structure before striking a neighboring unit, while another round hit both a window and the ceiling of an apartment.

“Sedgwick was quickly apprehended by responding police officers, including patrol officers, Bike Unit officers, Street Crimes Unit detectives, K9 units and Special Assignments Unit detectives,” Officer Aaron Bolin told FOX 10.
Sedgwick was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being booked into the Maricopa County Jail. One of the victims was also hospitalized.
Although Sedgwick and the victims appeared to know one another, investigators have not disclosed the nature of their relationships. Police recovered Sedgwick’s firearm from a dumpster and found ammunition, along with a plastic bag containing a white powdery substance, inside his apartment.
Sedgwick had previously been booked in 2020 on allegations involving domestic violence and endangerment. He was also charged with aggravated assault and threatening or intimidating someone with injury or property damage.
He is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on October 26.
