Protests against the government in Nepal escalated into violence on Tuesday, with authorities reporting at least 19 fatalities and many injuries, according to Reuters.

Protesters, predominantly young people from Generation Z, vandalized parliamentary buildings, the residences of government officials, and stormed prisons, prompting Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation in Kathmandu.

Local media indicated that the home of former Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal was allegedly set ablaze with his wife, Ravi Laxmi Chitrakar, inside the Dallu home.

Oli also saw his own residence set on fire and subsequently resigned on Tuesday. Black smoke poured from the Singha Durbar palace complex, the key government administrative hub.

Officials also confirmed that two prisons in western Nepal were stormed, leading to the escape of nearly 900 inmates.

The U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu has urged citizens to avoid large gatherings.

The chief of Nepal’s army, Ashok Raj Sigdel, cautioned that the military might need “to assume control of the situation” should the unrest persist, while encouraging demonstrators to engage in dialogue.
