The city of Atlanta is grappling with the tragic loss of a 66-year-old woman who was brutally stabbed on a MARTA train in what has been described by transit authorities as a random and unprovoked assault.
Margaret Swan, as identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, was the victim of this horrific incident. She was attacked while traveling on a train between the Lakewood-Fort McPherson and Oakland City stations, according to MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher.
MARTA expressed their grief and solidarity with the victim’s family and those who witnessed the incident, stating, “This appears to be a senseless act of violence, and our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones and those who witnessed this horrific incident.”
The suspect, 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews, has been charged with malice murder in connection with Swan’s death.
Reports indicate that Matthews allegedly approached Swan, who was seated alone, and began the attack by cutting her throat just moments before the train reached the Oakland City station. This heinous act has shocked the community and left many questioning the safety of public transportation.
