Authorities announced on Monday that Mexico’s infamous cartel leader was tracked down and killed after intelligence agencies traced one of his romantic partners to his hidden resort hideaway.

According to Mexico’s Defense Secretary, Ricardo Trevilla, investigators managed to identify a man associated with the girlfriend of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the New Generation Jalisco Cartel, before launching a raid on Sunday.

Intelligence teams discovered that the woman had been taken to Tapalpa, a picturesque mountain retreat in Jalisco, which ultimately led them to Oseguera and his associates, Trevilla disclosed to the press.

Although the girlfriend eventually left the resort, El Mencho and his group remained entrenched in the compound. This prompted the Mexican military to deploy its special forces to carry out the operation, leading to the cartel leader’s demise.
