Bandit tow trucks are hunting crash scenes across Los Angeles

Authorities in Los Angeles are warning drivers about so-called “bandit” tow truck operators who allegedly target crash scenes, trying to reach shaken motorists before authorized towing companies arrive and take possession of damaged vehicles.

Deputies from the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station recently pulled over a tow truck near La Brea Avenue and Fountain Avenue after noticing several warning signs, officials said.

“If you’re ever in a collision, protect yourself,” LASD WeHo warns. “Only work with a tow company your insurance provider or the responding deputy recommends. Legitimate operators display a company name and permit number. Never let a truck take your vehicle if you didn’t call for it.”

According to the station, the tow truck had no visible company name or logo, a key detail deputies say drivers should watch for after a traffic collision.

The driver was allegedly attempting to solicit a motorist at the crash scene, police said.

Deputies said they uncovered another issue during the stop: the truck’s registration had reportedly been expired since 2014.

Authorities also alleged the driver had a police scanner, a device the station says is often used by illegal tow operators to listen to emergency communications and beat legitimate tow companies to collision scenes.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of illegal towing and possession of a police scanner.

And authorities say the problem goes far beyond one truck.

The LAPD has stated that there are likely hundreds of bandit tow truck companies operating across LA.

The operators allegedly target busy freeways and major intersections where crashes happen most often. The I-5, I-10, I-405 and US-101 are described as prime hunting grounds.

Rental cars and tourists are also allegedly targeted.

Out-of-state drivers may be less familiar with local towing rules and easier to deceive during the confusion of a crash.

The alleged scam can continue long after the tow truck leaves the scene.

Operators can allegedly pick up a vehicle in one county and take it to another area or a hidden yard before the driver realizes what happened.

California authorities have tried to crack down.

The California Highway Patrol regularly launches joint task forces with local police to raid predatory yards across Southern California.

The California Bureau of Automotive Repair has also shut down local auto body shops, including LA Custom Collision, over alleged partnerships with illegal tow trucks.

California Assembly Bill 1263 was passed and signed into law on Oct. 10, 2023.

The law gives the Bureau of Automotive Repair more power to crack down on illegal towing storage fees and predatory rings.

But new laws have not stopped alleged bandit operators from showing up where vulnerable drivers are least prepared to fight back.

The sheriff’s advice is blunt.

Drivers should only use a tow company recommended by their insurance provider or the responding deputy.

Legitimate operators display a company name and permit number.
