The US Geological Survey says a magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit Taiwan just off its north-east coast late on Saturday (Sunday AEST).

An earthquake jolted the region at 11:05 p.m. local time, centered 32 kilometers from the coastal town of Yilan.

The tremors reverberated throughout the island, including the capital city of Taipei, where buildings were visibly shaken.

In Yilan County, a resident recounted the unsettling experience, noting that the building initially shook vertically before moving horizontally.

“It kept shaking for a while. I ran outside, but most people stayed inside. I was terrified,” he shared.

The quake’s epicenter was recorded at a depth of 70 kilometers. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties.

Local news footage captured scenes of hanging TVs swaying in an office and supermarket aisles littered with spilled cleaning products and broken bottles.

In a social media post, Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te urged residents to be alert for possible aftershocks.

Al Jazeera reported that the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, one of the world’s largest chip manufacturers, temporarily evacuated staff from some of its plants after evacuation thresholds were reached.

The affected staff have since returned to work.

The Taiwan Power Company said about 3000 homes briefly lost electricity during the quake.
