A grim scene unfolded at one of America’s most celebrated beach destinations this week, after a body was discovered near the shoreline and authorities launched an investigation.
The discovery was made Wednesday morning at La Jolla Cove, where a passerby reported seeing a body in roughly 2 feet of shallow water at about 9:30 a.m., according to FOX 5/KUSI. The San Diego Police Department was then notified.
San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel and lifeguards were called to the popular coastal spot and worked to recover the body from the water.
Fire officials told FOX 5/KUSI that police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the person’s death.
The body was found near La Jolla Cove, a picturesque San Diego beach area recently named the No. 1 beach in the United States by TripAdvisor. The scenic cove is widely known for its clear blue water, sandstone cliffs and frequent sea lion sightings.
Located about 13 miles from downtown San Diego, La Jolla Cove is a favorite summer snorkeling destination and sits within a protected marine reserve.
TripAdvisor said its beach rankings were based on a large number of standout reviews and opinions submitted by users over a yearlong period, noting that fewer than 1% of beaches earn the distinction.
The rankings were calculated using global TripAdvisor reviews posted between Nov. 30, 2024, and Dec. 1, 2025.
