Bondi faces questions on DOJ probes, Epstein files at Senate hearing

Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina, questioned Bondi regarding the National Guard’s presence in cities, inquiring about the political implications for the GOP.

Tillis expressed his concern, saying, “I’m struggling with the National Guard being called in, which seems to cover up the utter failure of state and local leaders,” and asked if this practice might be misunderstood by him.

Bondi replied, “In Chicago, the National Guard is essential. Our ICE members need them to secure the national buildings — this is the reason for their deployment.”

Tillis clarified his inquiry, emphasizing the collaboration between the National Guard and local law enforcement, suggesting, “It seems to me that these leaders should be voted out, and are we covering up a recurring issue that will resurface once we leave?”

He observed, “It almost feels as if they’ve become part of local law enforcement. I don’t view that as a best practice — it seems you agree.”

Bondi said, “I don’t believe our National Guard want to be doing that, but they’re going to be where they have to be to keep Americans safe.”

She cited her recent visit to Memphis: “Our Guard was there, and they were thrilled — they’re ready to help.”

Tillis further stated his belief that the president aims to make dangerous cities safer but cautioned that if systemic issues aren’t addressed in the next few years, they may inadvertently excuse governors, mayors, and council members from their duty to protect citizens.

“So, I just hope we strike the balance so that we’re not fixing a problem temporarily only to come back maybe even worse than the problem we’re fixing the moment this president who’s committed to local safety leaves,” he said.
