Trump's frantic push to save Kansas from blue wave fails as Adam Hamilton ousts Roger Marshall in heartland stunner

Democrat Adam Hamilton has delivered a historic upset in Kansas, becoming the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from the state since 1932 and snapping a Republican winning streak that had lasted nearly a century.

Hamilton defeated Republican Senator Roger Marshall after a fiercely contested race, dealing a major blow to the GOP’s effort to preserve its Senate majority.

The Associated Press declared Hamilton the winner at 11:25 p.m.

President Donald Trump made a late push to rescue Marshall’s campaign, traveling to Salina, Kansas, on Sunday—just two days before Election Day.

Vice President JD Vance had already visited the state twice to campaign for the Republican incumbent.

Trump’s appearance followed an abrupt reversal after criticism of his decision to cancel a rally scheduled for October 29.

The RNC maintained that Republicans were in a strong position and said Trump would participate in virtual events instead.

Trump initially insisted Marshall was doing “really well” and did not require an in-person visit from the president.

But he changed course the following day, restoring the rally after becoming concerned about the political optics of canceling it.

The Republican campaign operation spent millions in a bid to prevent Marshall from suffering a damaging defeat.

Following the August primary, Republican groups committed more than $26 million to advertising supporting Marshall—more than they had spent throughout his entire 2020 campaign.

The spending surge amounted to a rescue effort after some Republican operatives concluded that Marshall had treated the race too casually.

Hamilton and Democratic groups invested more than $38 million, pushing total advertising spending in Kansas to roughly $71 million and setting a statewide record.

Marshall’s campaign repeatedly portrayed Hamilton as “too woke and too weak for Kansas,” while a Senate Leadership Fund ad labeled him a “two-faced” extremist.

The Republican campaign also ran an advertisement questioning how Hamilton’s church handled abuse allegations involving youth camps in 2005 and 2006.

Hamilton said the incidents were reported to police and that he personally helped ensure the perpetrator was convicted.

Hamilton responded with an advertisement featuring a woman who said she was arrested over medical-debt collection practices at Marshall’s former medical practice in western Kansas.

Marshall’s attorneys issued a cease-and-desist letter, but Hamilton dismissed it as absurd.

The Democratic challenger, a well-known Methodist pastor, centered his campaign on economic concerns, especially the rising fuel and fertilizer costs pressuring farmers throughout Kansas.

His message resonated with independent voters and some moderate Republicans, allowing him to transform an expected Republican hold into a competitive contest.

Marshall, who has represented Kansas in the Senate since 2021, ran on extending Trump’s agenda and cautioned that a Democratic victory could put control of the chamber in opposition hands.

Trump won Kansas by more than 16 points in 2024, making Hamilton’s victory an extraordinary upset in a state long viewed as a Republican stronghold.

In a final effort to defend his record, Marshall released a campaign video explaining why his former medical practice pursued patients over unpaid bills.

Marshall said the practice often treated patients for free but sometimes referred outstanding accounts to collection agencies in order to remain financially viable.

The video was reportedly recorded and released without the knowledge of several senior campaign advisers, who had urged Marshall not to reopen the controversy so close to Election Day.

Marshall later said voters had repeatedly raised the issue with him and that he wanted to present his explanation.

The result came after the race tightened sharply in the final weeks, turning a traditionally safe Republican seat into one of the most closely watched contests in the country.

Although Trump carried Kansas by more than 16 points in 2024, Hamilton’s centrist campaign and voter anxiety over the economy made the contest far more competitive than anticipated.

Hamilton, a prominent Methodist pastor, sought to channel anger over higher living costs, including increases in fuel and fertilizer prices that have strained farmers across the state.

He also won backing from independent voters and a portion of the state’s moderate Republican electorate.

Marshall, a senator since 2021, had campaigned on continuing Trump’s policy agenda and warned that Hamilton’s victory could help Democrats take control of the Senate.

Kansas had not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1932, making Hamilton’s win a rare and consequential test of Republican strength in a state Trump carried comfortably.
