Brendan Fraser headlines the new film “Rental Family,” where he portrays an actor residing in Japan. His character is presented with the unique chance to take on various roles—not on the silver screen, but within the realm of everyday life.

Employed by an agency that rents out individuals, Fraser’s character is engaged for diverse purposes by clients who require someone to fill different roles in their personal lives.

In this film, emerging talent Shannon Gorman marks her debut performance.

“Her genuine nature and the depth of emotion she conveyed were truly remarkable,” Fraser commented.

Among Fraser’s co-stars is Takehiro Hira, who plays the head of the rental family.

“He’s also an excellent producer, adept at discovering talent and placing them where they can truly shine,” Hira remarked.

“In a society that is buzzing with activity, it’s possible to be very lonesome and find yourself with solitude. And so, a place like Rental Family Agency does exist where there can be stand-ins, a sort of surrogacy of whichever real family relation you need to just show up for somebody and look them in the eyes and, as she says, let them know you exist. It’s so meaningful,” said Fraser.

“Rental Family” starts out on a lighter note, but it eventually goes pretty deep. Fraser credits director Hikari with making all the right moves.

“Every choice is made specifically, and they all pay off…They’re set up like a good volleyball spike, you know, boom, smack!” Fraser said. “She knows exactly what she’s doing. She knows how to deliver the emotional satisfaction that every audience is craving.”

“Rental Family” is in theaters now.
