At least four people shot at Brockton World Cup celebration near Boston

At least four people were shot Friday night in a Boston suburb after a Cape Verde World Cup celebration turned violent, authorities said.

Large crowds of Cape Verde supporters had gathered in downtown Brockton when police began receiving multiple reports of gunfire on Main Street shortly before midnight, Boston 25 News reported.

“Officers responded to the intersection of Main Street and Park Street and found at least four people with gunshot wounds,” the Brockton Police Department said in a statement.

Authorities did not immediately release the victims’ names or provide details on the extent of their injuries.

No arrests have been announced, and police are continuing to investigate the shooting, according to reports.

The gathering followed Cape Verde’s draw against Saudi Arabia in a match played Friday night in Atlanta.

With the result, the small African island nation became the smallest country to advance to the World Cup knockout round.

Brockton has the largest Cape Verdean community in the United States, according to NBC Boston.

France and Norway faced off at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Friday night with no reports of chaos stemming from Francophilic celebrations of Les Bleus 4-1 win.
