Bryan Kohberger Eyes Post-Conviction Relief After Appeal Waiver

Bryan Kohberger, who admitted to murdering four University of Idaho students during a 4 a.m. home invasion, is preparing to seek post-conviction relief after entering a guilty plea, two sources familiar with the matter said.

Kohberger is expected to claim that he received ineffective legal representation.

The New York Times first reported the development after Kohberger contacted one of its reporters directly and, in his first public comments outside court, said he has an “absolute claim of innocence.”

“My actual innocence is my truth, and the plea, hinged on by false promises and blatant disinformation, MUST be withdrawn,” he told the outlet.

Kohberger is serving four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, along with an additional 10 years, for the Nov. 13, 2022, killings of University of Idaho students Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves. He pleaded guilty in July 2025.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Kohberger waived his right to appeal.
