In a decisive move, California voters have given the green light to Proposition 50, a measure set to potentially shift five U.S. House seats in favor of Democrats, countering Republican strongholds in Texas.
The Associated Press announced the victory for Prop 50 almost immediately after the polls closed on Tuesday evening.
“California voters have approved new congressional district lines, marking a significant win for Democrats in the nation’s redistricting efforts. This decision is poised to influence which party will take control of the U.S. House in the 2026 elections,” the AP reported.
Currently, Republicans hold 219 seats in the U.S. House, compared to the Democrats’ 213. The five seats up for grabs in the 2026 midterms could prove pivotal in altering the balance of power. Governor Gavin Newsom of California has been a staunch supporter of Prop 50, asserting that it serves as a critical countermeasure against President Trump.
“Proposition 50 in California called on voters to pause the House district maps created by an independent commission, opting instead for new configurations devised by the Democrat-led Legislature. These revised districts are set to be implemented for the elections in 2026, 2028, and 2030,” the AP highlighted.
