Carville urges Democrats to move on from Kamala Harris, says he doesn't 'feel sorry'

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville shared his perspective on Sunday, advising former Vice President Kamala Harris to reflect on her political journey with pride and consider stepping aside for the 2028 presidential race.

As the 2028 Democratic nomination race heats up, Harris finds herself amidst a field of anticipated high-profile contenders. Her initial wave of acclaim, following her role stepping in for then-President Joe Biden, was overshadowed by an unprecedented defeat to President Trump in 2024. Since then, several public voices have suggested she allow space for new candidates to emerge in the upcoming election.

During a broadcast, a listener named Charles from New Zealand questioned the hosts about Harris’s viability as a candidate, proposing that her fortunes might have been different had Biden withdrawn earlier.

Al Hunt, Carville’s co-host, was quick to dismiss this notion, responding, “Charles, on this one, we’re not on the same page.”

Hunt elaborated, “I thought she was a poor candidate in 2024, and similarly ineffective back in 2019. She had a promising start for the nomination but faltered during her campaign. Even if Biden had stepped aside earlier, opening up the contest, I doubt she would have emerged victorious. I don’t see her as a viable candidate in 2028, and I hope she refrains from running.”

Carville, while previously critical of Harris’s campaign expenditure, which he called the “most ineffective $2 billion ever spent,” adopted a more conciliatory tone. He suggested that Harris should take pride in her accomplishments, acknowledging the significance of her contributions despite the challenges she faced.

“Vice President Harris was the district attorney for San Francisco – major city – was the attorney general of California, to say a major state would be an understatement. Largest state in the country. She was then the United States senator from California. Okay, it’s pretty, pretty stout. Then she was vice president. That’s really stout. And then she was the uncontested nominee of her party,” he recalled.

“You know what? She’s had an incredible political career,” he continued. “Literally 99.98572% of any politician would give their right arm to have a career that successful. I do not feel sorry for her. You had the greatest gift that anybody can have. You had a chance.”

“I don’t see any possibility that the Democrats are going to go back to 2024,” Carville said, suggesting Democrats simply wish to disassociate from that era completely.

Carville went on to suggest that while people in the party do not dislike Harris as a person, and respect what she has done, nonetheless, “Exit stage left, stage right, I don’t care. It’s just — you’ve had a real, real profound political career.”

He did suggest one viable avenue for her political career, however.

“Who knows? Maybe as a Democratic president they’ll put you in the Supreme Court. You couldn’t do no worse than what the f— we got there now.”
