In central North Carolina, torrential rains led to flooded roads and towns, triggering numerous water rescues as residents were compelled to evacuate, authorities reported on Monday.
The Chapel Hill Fire Department and neighboring agencies completed more than 50 water rescues since Sunday evening, the town said Monday morning.
In Chapel Hill, many rescues occurred where floodwaters had invaded or threatened to invade apartments and condos, as stated by officials. Additional rescues took place at shopping centers overwhelmed by flooding in both businesses and parking areas.
More than 60 people were displaced in Chapel Hill. There were no reports of injuries as of Monday morning, officials said.
More than 34,000 customers were without power on Monday morning, according to poweroutage.us.
The flooding originated from the remnants of Tropical Depression Chantal, which made landfall near Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, early Sunday.
The remaining effects of Chantal are anticipated to proceed northward on Monday, hitting Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C., with intense rain and thunderstorms.
