The incident unfolded around 5:54 p.m. on March 25, along the 1300 block of South Kedzie Avenue in the North Lawndale neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

Despite being critically injured in the shooting, Henyard’s father survived.

Henyard confirmed to ABC7 that her father was indeed the victim of the attack.

In a statement, the former mayor expressed her distress, saying, “Yes, it is true, my family has been directly affected by the senseless gun violence that continues to plague Illinois. Yesterday, my father, my hero, was an innocent victim of this random and heartbreaking violence. This tragedy has shaken my family to its core and, unfortunately, reflects a reality that far too many families across our state are facing.”

No further information about the shooting was immediately available as Chicago police continue to investigate.
