A California Democrat, recently convicted of drunk driving, has become an internet sensation as he speeds around Washington, D.C. on an e-scooter.
Representative Dave Min from Orange County is currently advocating for laws concerning e-bikes and other “micro-mobility” devices. A recent sighting of him navigating Capitol Hill on an electric scooter has captured public attention.
His scooter escapades have sparked a flurry of social media comments, with many poking fun at the congressman. Back in May 2023, Min was arrested in Sacramento for driving under the influence after running a red light, with tests revealing his blood alcohol content was almost double the legal limit. Following the incident, he was handed years of probation after pleading no contest to the misdemeanor DUI charge.
“I wonder why Congressman Min drives a scooter to work,” Texas Republican Rep. Brandon Gill wrote on X.
“He is riding that scooter like a madman though,” another added.
“You really can’t make it up!” a third wrote.
The scooter report showed Min riding around Capitol Hill wearing suit, dress shoes, and a helmet. He said that when he first told his staff he would be riding around on a scooter that “they didn’t love the idea.”
He’s doing it as he introduced the “Safe Speeds Act” last month alongside Reps. Mike Lawler, Brian Fitzpatrick and Jared Huffman. Min wanted to “establish a comprehensive federal regulatory standard for e-bikes and other electric micromobility products.”
“E-bikes are an affordable, convenient, and popular mode of transportation in my district and across the nation,” Min said in a press release.
“However, the lack of oversight regarding e-bikes pose serious safety risks to our children and our communities. This bill will ensure federal e-bike standards are clearly defined while also empowering local governments to enhance their safety programs, keeping our communities safe while in transit,” he added.
The National Republican Congressional Committee isn’t amused by Min’s scooter-riding.
“It’s downright pathetic that Dave ‘DUI’ Min wants America to see him as the face of ‘micro-mobility methods.’ For a man this small, a scooter is the only vehicle left that matches his stature and judgment, after getting a DUI in a government vehicle. Californians deserve a representative focused on serving the public, not rehabilitating his own image,” NRCC spokesman Christian Martinez told The California Post.
The California Post reached out to Min’s office for comment.
