Larry Snelling retirement: Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling retiring, CPD announces

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling announced Wednesday that he is retiring after more than 30 years with the department.

Snelling said his departure from the top job will take effect July 15.

The superintendent shared the news in a letter that CPD posted to social media Wednesday afternoon.

Snelling was appointed superintendent in 2023 following a lengthy and well-regarded career in the Chicago Police Department. Since then, Chicago’s crime rate has declined each year.

In his statement, Snelling wrote in part, “I am closing out this chapter of my life with a heart full of gratitude for every Chicagoan and every community partner who embraced me during my time at the Chicago Police Department. Thank you does not fully express my appreciation for you, the people of Chicago.”
