CHICAGO () — A high-stakes fight over the Chicago Public Schools budget is now taking shape as district leaders try to close a massive funding gap while facing sharp resistance from the Chicago Teachers Union.
CPS held two public hearings Monday on its proposed spending plan, a budget already drawing significant pushback from CTU members and school advocates who say students and educators should not bear the brunt of the district’s financial crisis.

The district is confronting a $720 million deficit, but CPS CEO Dr. Macquline King said there is reason for some optimism: well over half of the teachers affected by layoffs are expected to be offered new jobs within the school system.
