As officers attempted to defuse the situation and separate the individuals, an unexpected shot was fired from an assailant’s weapon. The bullet hit an officer’s vest, underscoring the perilous nature of the encounter.

In the midst of the chaos, another officer discharged his weapon, aiming at the offender. Unfortunately, the gunfire also struck the initial victim in the process. The injured individual was promptly transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he is reported to be in fair condition.

Another officer returned fire, striking the offender and accidentally striking the victim, police said.

The victim was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition.

The offender was taken to Christ Hospital in fair condition.

The officer who was hit in his vest was also taken to a local hospital, but he has since been discharged.

CPD’s Investigative Response Team and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability are investigating.
