Chicago teen takeovers: Local youth to weigh-in on how to prevent mass gatherings, enforce curfews, amid violent summer 2026

The planned series of conversations is expected to examine not only how to prevent large, disruptive gatherings, but also how to offer teens safer and more constructive options.

The latest major teen gathering took place at 57th Street Beach, where Chicago police said more than 50 people were arrested and firearms were recovered that night.

Wednesday’s meeting is intended to generate recommendations for how the city should respond to the ongoing issue.

Twenty-sixth Ward Alderperson Jessie Fuentes will lead the meeting, giving teenagers a chance to voice their perspectives and propose ideas regarding the so-called takeovers.

Teen takeovers have continued to pose a significant challenge in Chicago, raising concerns about public safety and property damage.

Previous proposals have included making parents financially liable for damage and giving Chicago police the authority to impose a temporary downtown curfew when crowds become unruly.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson opposed both of those measures.

While some argue the way to address the issue is through curfews and enforcement, youth organizers have said the way to prevent teen takeovers is to create more jobs and structured spaces for teens so they can socialize without being criminalized.

The meeting begins at 11 a.m. at Chicago City Hall Council Chambers.
