GENEVA, Ill. (WLS) — An Aurora man has been charged with DUI-related offenses after police said a head-on collision in Geneva left a woman dead and her son critically hurt Saturday night.

Geneva police and firefighters were called to the 1000-block of South Randall Road shortly before 9:15 p.m. after reports of a serious crash.

24/7.

According to police, 40-year-old Christian Mares, of Aurora, was traveling north on Randall Road in a blue 2013 Chevrolet Camaro when he crossed the double yellow line into oncoming southbound lanes and hit a red 2019 Nissan Versa.

The driver of the Nissan, a 71-year-old woman from Geneva, was pronounced dead at the crash scene, authorities said. Her name had not been released right away.

Her 26-year-old son, who was riding as a passenger in the Nissan, was first taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva and later airlifted to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital in Chicago.

Mares was also treated for injuries at Delnor Hospital before being transferred to the Kane County Jail. Police said he faces multiple charges, including reckless homicide, aggravated driving under the influence and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Randall Road was closed between Fargo and Kelsinger roads for several hours while investigators worked at the scene. The road reopened shortly after 3 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation by Geneva police, the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Kane County Coroner’s Office.
