In a dramatic rescue on Wednesday, San Francisco fire crews helped a woman who had found herself trapped on rocks beneath a cliff, with the waves crashing below her.
The circumstances leading to the woman’s precarious position near the iconic Cliff House remain unclear. This famous spot, situated above Ocean Beach on San Francisco’s northwestern edge, is a favorite among locals and tourists alike for its scenic hiking trails and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.
According to a statement from the San Francisco Fire Department, the woman had somehow gone over the cliff and ended up stranded on the rocks. Details about how she got there were not immediately disclosed. At the time of the rescue, she was wearing a bikini and was barefoot.
Television news helicopters captured the tense moments as the woman clung to the rocky surface while waves surged beneath her. A firefighter, having rappelled down the cliff, carefully approached her. He secured her with ropes and a helmet, preparing to guide her safely back up to the road.
Within minutes, the woman was successfully brought to the top of the cliff and transported to a hospital via ambulance.
The Cliff House, which is managed by the National Park Service, has a storied history. However, its restaurant has remained closed since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
