A Delta Air Lines flight headed for Fort Lauderdale had to return to Atlanta on Thursday morning after a smoky smell was detected inside the aircraft, according to the airline.
Delta Flight 1334 departed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at about 7 a.m. when crew members were alerted to what the airline described as “a smoky odor” on board.
The captain turned the plane around and brought it safely back to the Atlanta airport, where it landed without any reported injuries.
“Delta flight 1334 safely returned to Atlanta shortly after departure out of an abundance of caution after a smoky odor was reported onboard. The flight crew followed established procedures, and the aircraft landed normally without incident,” the airline said in a statement.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and crew, and we apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels.”
The source of the odor had not been officially determined. FOX 5 reported that the smell appeared to be coming from the cockpit area.
Authorities had not immediately said whether any of the 181 passengers aboard the Fort Lauderdale-bound flight required medical attention after the emergency landing.
Flight tracking information indicated the delayed Delta flight was expected to take off again about two hours and 30 minutes behind schedule.
