A DEMOCRATIC lawmaker has faced allegations of shoplifting at a self-checkout and later offered an unusual explanation for the incident.

Raghib Allie-Brennan apparently failed to scan two products when he was using a machine inside the store on Monday.

His apparent scanning error was caught on security, as reported by the Connecticut Mirror.

The items he allegedly failed to scan came to $26.69.

Target staffers stopped him at the exit of the store in Bethel – located around 60 miles from Hartford – because they recognized him.

Allie-Brennan revealed he was heading to visit his grandmother at the hospital.

He admitted that he was in a “rush” to head there.

“I was juggling multiple purchases,” he wrote on Facebook

“Even though I don’t have a previous record, I fully acknowledge my mistake and am actively engaging with legal procedures to address the situation speedily and with respect.

“I honor the law and Target’s authority to uphold their loss prevention measures, and I am dedicated to continuing to serve my community with openness and honesty.”

Allie-Brennan, from Queens, has been a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives since 2019.

He has since been charged in relation to the shoplifting incident.

Cops are yet to release the full police report as they say the investigation is still ongoing.

Allie-Brennan is due to appear in Danbury Superior Court on July 1.

He is facing a larceny in the sixth degree charge, which refers to petty theft.

Penalties for the offense include a 90-day jail sentence and a fine of up to $500, according to lawyer Allan F. Friedman.

Target’s anti-theft measures

Target has implemented multiple anti-theft measures to combat crime in the store.

The retail giant has placed some items behind locked cases, which has resulted in customer backlash.

In April 2024, reports surfaced that it is planning to add TruScan cameras to its self-checkout registers.

Target also added weight sensors to its self-checkout registers in another move to combat theft.

Retailers have turned to a series of strategies in a bid to clamp down on theft.

Stores such as Walmart, CVS, and Target have resorted to locking items away in cabinets.

Shoppers must push a button in a bid to grab a staffer’s attention who then retrieves the item from the case.

The policy has sparked fury among some who have complained about having to wait for items.

Shoppers have taken to social media to complain they don’t have the patience to wait for items.

Some customers have shared images from inside supermarkets that show Sharpie pens locked away.

The U.S. Sun reported how CVS chiefs were trialing a concept that would allow shoppers to unlock cases via an app.

This would be an alternative to having to wait for a staffer.

Statement from Raghib Allie-Brennan

DEMOCRATIC lawmaker Raghib Allie-Brennan has issued a statement after he was arrested

“During a recent visit to the Bethel Target, two items in my armload of others were not scanned,” he wrote on Facebook.

“I was in a rush to bring items to my grandmother in the hospital, the store didn’t have bags, and I was juggling multiple purchases.

“While I do not have a record, I take full responsibility for the error and am working through the legal processes to resolve the matter quickly and respectfully.

“I respect the law and Target’s right to enforce their loss prevention policy, and I remain committed to serving my community with transparency and integrity.”
