Democrats win key Georgia special elections seen as midterm bellwethers

In a significant political shift, Democrats are anticipated to secure two seats on Georgia’s Public Service Commission, a move seen as a crucial indicator ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, as reported by Decision Desk HQ.

Democratic contenders Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard are expected to triumph over Republican incumbents Tim Echols and Fitz Johnson in Districts 2 and 3, respectively.

This election is noteworthy because it represents the first Democratic victory in a Public Service Commission contest since 2000, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Though Republicans maintained control over all five commissioner positions before this election, the Democrats’ success will now lead to a 3-2 Republican majority on the commission. These results may serve as a cautionary signal to Republicans, especially considering the energized Democratic voter base as the 2026 elections approach.

Earlier this year, Republicans managed to retain a Georgia Senate seat in a special election after Democrat Debra Shigley pushed the contest into a runoff in District 21’s general election. Ultimately, Republican Jason Dickerson secured the seat in the runoff.

Elsewhere, Democrats celebrated victories in other states on Tuesday, notably in Virginia, where projections indicated wins in the gubernatorial and lieutenant governor races.
