The president of the Naperville Community Unit School District 203 board states they aim to reach a fair agreement for both teachers and taxpayers. Unfortunately, teachers may begin a strike as soon as next week.

Teachers in Naperville are pushing for a new contract amidst challenging negotiations within this district, covering pre-K through 12th grade.

Prior to the District 203 school board meeting, a rally took place outside Naperville Central High School, drawing a large crowd that filled both the meeting room and an additional overflow space.

During the public comment session, one woman highlighted the need for district leaders to treat their staff with the same dignity they expect among students.

Ross Berkley, President of the Naperville Unit Education Association, pointed out that teacher relationships have suffered, and many educators feel undervalued and unappreciated.

The district and the teachers’ union have been negotiating since February. Recently, teachers voted to authorize a strike, with major disagreements centering around proposed changes to the school day schedule and salary matters.

“We have the number one academically performing district as far as student performance goes as unit districts in the state of Illinois. Our compensation does not reflect that,” Berkley said.

“The union’s current proposal is simply not sustainable. If we were to accept their proposal, our board would have to make tough choices that would directly impact you and your families,” said Naperville 203 Board President Charles Cush.

The district says its latest offer would make Naperville teachers among the highest paid in the region.

“Our offer is strong and competitive with raises across all four years, including a compounded raise of over 10% in the first two years alone and continued excellent health benefits,” Cush said.

Contract talks with a federal mediator are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week.
