Deputy US Marshal fatally shot while serving arrest warrant in Louisiana

A deputy U.S. marshal was shot and killed Monday while attempting to serve an arrest warrant in Louisiana, officials said.

The shooting happened around 3 p.m. in Alexandria, where members of the U.S. Marshals Violent Offender Task Force and local sheriff’s detectives were carrying out “a law enforcement operation” to apprehend a wanted fugitive, the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The U.S. Marshals Service later confirmed that a deputy marshal assigned to the Western District of Louisiana was fatally wounded during the operation. The deputy’s name was not immediately released.

Authorities said the suspect, who was also injured, was taken into custody after what they described as a “lengthy standoff” and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Officials have not said whether law enforcement officers fired back at the suspect, nor have they disclosed the nature or severity of the suspect’s injuries.

The fatal shooting will be investigated by the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana State Police and the FBI, authorities said.

“The FBI responded to an incident this afternoon in Alexandria with the Alexandria Police Department, Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Louisiana State Police,” the FBI New Orleans Field Office said in a statement to KALB.

“The FBI is now leading the investigation into an assault on a federal officer. Louisiana State Police is also investigating potential violations of state law. The subject, now under investigation, was taken into custody, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.”

More details on how the shooting unfolded were not immediately available on Monday night.

The FBI’s New Orleans Field Office did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
