National Geographic's 'Time and Water' is a love letter to Iceland's melting glaciers

Acclaimed director Sara Dosa, who received an Academy Award nomination, has partnered with esteemed Icelandic poet and author Andri Snær Magnason to create the documentary “Time and Water.”

The film intricately blends Magnason’s personal family memories with the poignant narrative of Iceland’s rapidly melting glaciers, offering viewers a unique perspective on the impact of climate change.

“Andri has this remarkable ability to make the vast and daunting topics of our era, such as the climate crisis, feel intensely emotional and personal,” Dosa explained.

In an extraordinary gesture of trust, Magnason provided Dosa with access to his extensive personal archives, which included decades of family footage.

“I entrusted her not only with my book, which was significant in itself, but also with 70 years of family films. When I saw everything come together with color, grading, and music, it stirred a deep emotional response in me,” Magnason shared.

While entrusting one’s life story to a filmmaker might seem daunting, Dosa’s reputation precedes her. Known for her ability to capture the intimate bond between humans and nature, as demonstrated in her Oscar-nominated work “Fire of Love,” she is well-equipped to handle such a personal narrative.

“There’s so many things about this project that totally ignited my imagination,” said Dosa. “We’re always looking for awe with glaciers as well as the kind of human stories that we showcase in the film. So I’ll just say it’s a dream come true.”

“Time and Water” first captured audiences when National Geographic brought it to the Sundance Film Festival.

“We talk about telling gripping stories that inspire a deeper connection to our world,” said Carolyn Bernstein, National Geographic’s Executive Vice President of Global Scripted Content & Documentary Films. “I think ‘Time and Water’ is just the perfect example of that.”

“Time and Water” will be released in New York theaters May 29. It’ll be released June 5 in Los Angeles and San Francisco. And then it’ll be on National Geographic and Disney+ later this year.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of National Geographic and this ABC station.
