What is Festivus? What to know about the holiday from 'Seinfeld' for the rest of us

Are you finding it hard to connect with the festive cheer this season? If traditional holidays like Christmas or Hanukkah were never a part of your upbringing, there’s no need to feel left out. Enter Festivus, the celebration tailor-made for “the rest of us.”

What is Festivus?

This unconventional holiday emerged from the popular ’90s sitcom Seinfeld. In the episode titled “The Strike,” which debuted on December 18, 1997, George Costanza’s family introduces Festivus as a quirky alternative to conventional festivities.

When is Festivus 2025?

On Seinfeld, Festivus is held on December 23. For the year 2025, this places the holiday on the Tuesday preceding Christmas. Nonetheless, fans have embraced the spirit of Festivus throughout December since its television introduction.

What inspired Festivus?

The festive concept was conceived by Seinfeld writer Dan O’Keefe, inspired by a similar tradition his father created, complete with an Airing of Grievances and a wrestling match. An odd tradition that didn’t make it to the show was O’Keefe’s father nailing a clock in a bag to the wall.

What are the traditions of Festivus?

A hallmark of Festivus is the Airing of Grievances, offering family and friends a chance to openly express how others have let them down over the past year.

The holiday also features a Festivus dinner, followed by the Feats of Strength competition. In this event, participants must attempt to pin the head of the household in a wrestling match, all beneath the iconic Festivus pole.

What is served at a Festivus dinner?

Spaghetti or meatloaf were both commonly accepted as the proper Festivus dish because it was difficult to distinguish what exactly Estelle Costanza served in the dinner scene. Thanks to the HD release of the episode, the dish has been positively identified as meatloaf served on a bed of lettuce. However, the O’Keefe family ate turkey or ham with dessert of a cake decorated with M&Ms. Many fans of the show choose to eat foods that were commonly featured throughout the run of Seinfeld, like poppyseed bagels or black and white cookies.

How many people celebrate Festivus?

While exact numbers are unclear, Festivus has grown in popularity over the years, with people celebrating it as a way to reminisce about Seinfeld or as a tongue-in-cheek protest to the commercialism of the holidays.
