2 dead, 6 injured in downtown Minneapolis shooting

Authorities said the suspected gunman was also found dead, though officials have not yet said how he died.

MINNEAPOLIS — Two people were killed and six others, including three police officers, were injured Wednesday in a shooting at an apartment building near downtown Minneapolis, according to the Minneapolis Police Department. The suspected shooter is also dead.

Four civilians and three officers were transported to hospitals with a range of injuries. One of the people taken to the hospital later died, police spokesperson Sgt. Garrett Parten said during a news conference. Another victim was discovered dead inside the building.

Police were called to the apartment building near 15 E. Grant St. at 4:36 p.m. on Sept. 2 after reports of gunfire. Officers arrived about three minutes later, heard shots coming from an upper floor and found one person dead, police said.

When officers reached the upper level, they encountered what police described as a “haze” and exchanged gunfire with the shooter.

Two officers were struck by gunfire, while a third officer sustained other non-life-threatening injuries. Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson said one officer was shot in the leg and another was shot twice in the abdomen. All three officers are expected to fully recover.

Police said the shooter is dead, but the circumstances of his death remain unclear. Peterson also said officers were familiar with the gunman.

“I can’t emphasize how dangerous this situation was and how heroic our officers were in their response,” Mayor Jacob Frey said at a news conference Wednesday evening.

Sources told KARE 11’s Lou Raguse that the shooting began as a domestic incident between the shooter and one of the shooting victims. Raguse said the shooter opened fire at the officers responding, while the shooter retreated to an apartment.

KARE 11 identified the suspect as Carlton Johnson II. According to court records, Johnson was in the process of being evicted from the Loring Towers on East Grant Street.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said in a post on social media that state officials are on the ground helping local law enforcement respond to the shooting.

“Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,” Walz said. “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”

The FBI was responding to the shooting and “will offer any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities,” Director Kash Patel said in a post on the social platform X.
