Nearly 11 years following the murder of Florida State University law professor Dan Markel in his driveway, Donna Sue Adelson, his former mother-in-law, will now face charges. She is accused of orchestrating the crime.
The 75-year-old grandmother faces charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation of murder, which prosecutors describe as a deliberate family scheme to release her daughter, Wendi Adelson, from a contentious custody dispute. She has declared her innocence.
Former Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg, who was also a friend of Markel, told Fox News Digital the long wait for trial was deliberate.
“Donna’s judgment day is here, and while it has come slowly, justice will finally be served,” said a legal observer. “Prosecutors meticulously worked through the case, starting with the hitmen, then moving to Katherine Magbanua [a former girlfriend of Adelson], followed by Charlie Adelson [Markel’s former brother-in-law]. They now have sufficient evidence to proceed against Donna.”
Donna Adelson appeared virtually in court on January 22, 2024, for a case management session. She faces first-degree murder charges concerning the 2014 killing of Dan Markel, her son-in-law.
While Wendi has not been charged, her name frequently comes up in legal filings. She is contesting a subpoena requiring her testimony at her mother’s trial, citing potential risks to her Fifth Amendment protections. Aronberg predicts she may still testify if offered immunity by the prosecution.
“As for Donna, she’ll testify too,” Aronberg said. “She really believes her story. But just like Charlie, she’ll learn the jury isn’t buying it.”
