SAN FRANCISCO — Elizabeth Holmes, the former CEO of Theranos who fell from grace, has reportedly petitioned the Trump administration to reduce her prison time, as confirmed by the U.S. Justice Department’s Office of the Pardon Attorney.

At 41, Holmes is currently serving a sentence with nearly six years remaining, following her conviction for deceiving investors with misleading information about her company’s innovative blood-testing technology.

Efforts have been made to reach out to Holmes’ legal team and the Department of Justice for further comments on the matter.

According to the Office of the Pardon Attorney’s online portal, Holmes submitted her request in 2025. The petition’s status is listed as “pending,” indicating it is presently under examination.

The website notes, “We cannot disclose details regarding the review of a specific case.”

As per the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Holmes is scheduled for release on December 30, 2031.

Holmes unsuccessfully fought to delay her incarceration after she was found guilty of investor fraud and conspiracy in 2022.

Last year, an appeals court upheld the fraud convictions, sentences and $452 million restitution order for Holmes and her second-in-command, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, who was also found guilty of fraud and conspiracy.

The two had argued the court committed several legal errors and violated their constitutional rights during their separate trials. The three-judge panel for the appeals court rejected their claims, finding that any errors were harmless or that their arguments failed to show any violation.

As part of their appeal, they also challenged the restitution, arguing the figure should not have been based on the investors’ total investments. The panel stood by the restitution awarded by the lower court, concluding the “victims’ actual losses were equal to the total amount of their investments.”
