After more than a hundred years of serving up classic fare, the iconic Cole’s French Dip bid farewell on Saturday, marking the end of an era for one of Los Angeles’ most storied dining spots.

Claiming the title as the original creator of the French dip sandwich, this cherished eatery now transitions from vibrant culinary scene to cherished memory.

In a grand send-off, early risers formed a line that snaked around the block by midmorning, showcasing the deep affection and nostalgia the city holds for this legendary establishment.

Owner Cedd Moses and his team acknowledged that closing was the inevitable outcome, driven by increasing expenses, the lingering impact of the pandemic, staffing challenges, and reduced foot traffic in the downtown area.

Saturday’s crowd didn’t gather solely for memories.

“With so many historic restaurants in LA closing, I wanted to support and remain part of this remarkable culinary community,” shared patron Bryson Pintard with The Post.

“This might not be the greatest sandwich you ever had in your life, but what you’re getting is a taste of the Hollywood glamour that it once was.”

Founded in 1908 inside the Pacific Electric Building, Cole’s built its legend on roast beef nestled in soft bread and dunked in savory jus, a happy accident also claimed by downtown rival Philippe’s.

The wood-paneled dining room, late-night bar and decades of Hollywood lore made it a stop for generations of Angelenos and visitors.

Traveling from Ranch Cucamonga, customer Alexandra Pinedo said the sandwich “tasted like a hug in a way.”

Her partner, Edgar De La Torre, described the food as “classic, simple ingredients and timeless flavor.”

Cole’s is hosting a “Farewell Weekend” Saturday and Sunday, raising funds for the Independent Hospitality Coalition.

Despite the doors closing on Sunday night, there’s still a small chance Cole’s may rise again.

Multiple buyers have expressed interest in purchasing and potentially reopening the landmark.
