Empire State Building Climbers Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus Kuznetsov Granted Supervised Release Ahead of Court Date

NEW YORK — A couple accused of climbing to the top of the Empire State Building as part of an engagement stunt were granted supervised release Thursday after a brief court appearance in Manhattan.

The pair, who live in East Orange, New Jersey, drew widespread attention Wednesday after scaling the Empire State Building’s spire and appearing to get engaged high above New York City.

Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, and Angelina Nikolau, 33, were arraigned Thursday morning after spending the first night of their engagement in separate holding cells.

They appeared in court wearing the same black clothing seen in images and video from the climb a day earlier.

Prosecutors formally charged them with reckless endangerment, burglary, criminal mischief and additional offenses.

The couple did not enter pleas. Their attorney argued that prosecutors had “overcharged” the case. Both were placed on supervised release pending their next court date, scheduled for Aug. 24.
