US journalist missing in Norway after backpacking trip, family says

Efforts are in progress to locate an American journalist who vanished on a Norwegian glacier within Folgefonna National Park while on a solo backpacking adventure, as reported by his family.

Alec Luhn, 38, was declared missing on Monday by the Norwegian authorities when he failed to board his scheduled flight back to England after commencing his hike on July 31 in Odda, located in southwestern Norway. His wife, Veronika Silchenko, made a social media appeal for anyone with information on his whereabouts to reach out.

Luhn, a distinguished American environmental journalist, had been enjoying a family vacation before setting off on the hike and had shared his location details, according to CBS News.

“The weather conditions began to deteriorate significantly around midnight,” noted Tatjana Knappen of the Western Police District to Norway’s state broadcaster NRK. “At that point, it was unsafe to proceed with the search in the mountainous areas.”

On Tuesday, a volunteer search and rescue team, working alongside police, sniffer dogs, and drones, resumed the search before unfavorable weather conditions led to another halt.

The Norwegian Red Cross reported that search operations were continuously conducted on Tuesday. It acknowledged that despite the search teams being local and knowledgeable about the terrain, the effort was particularly difficult due to the harsh conditions and severe weather challenges.
