Authorities at both federal and state levels are actively responding to a shooting incident at a Reform Jewish synagogue located in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The situation reportedly began when a suspect drove a vehicle into the synagogue and subsequently opened fire.

The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time on Thursday at Temple Israel, according to reports from the Michigan State Police.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that FBI agents, in collaboration with Michigan partners, are present at the scene. They are addressing what has been described as both a vehicle ramming and an active shooter scenario at the synagogue.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer stated she is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the Michigan State Police to gather more details.

“This is heartbreaking,” Governor Whitmer expressed in a post on X. “The Jewish community in Michigan deserves to live and worship freely, without fear. Antisemitism and violence are unacceptable here. I am hoping for everyone’s safety. My gratitude goes out to law enforcement for their prompt response.”

In response to the situation, Bloomfield Township Police have confirmed that schools in Bloomfield Hills have been placed in secure mode as a precautionary measure.

“This is out of precaution, there are no known threats to Bloomfield Hills schools at this time,” the agency wrote in a statement.

Neighboring agency Ann Arbor Police Department said its officers will also increase patrols and respond to local houses of worship and schools throughout the city as a precautionary measure.

“We are asking for community members to stay away from the area to allow for police response,” state police wrote in a statement. “Troopers are also increasing patrols at other places of worship in the district.”

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
