'Schitt's Creek' sequel plans were considered prior to Catherine O'Hara's death, Dan Levy says

Before Catherine O’Hara’s passing on January 30, Dan Levy had been contemplating a follow-up series to the beloved sitcom “Schitt’s Creek.”

WASHINGTON — Dan Levy, the creative mind and star behind “Schitt’s Creek,” recently shared that he was exploring the idea of a sequel to the acclaimed series. However, those plans were halted after the death of Catherine O’Hara.

O’Hara passed away at the age of 71 on January 30. Her agency, CAA, confirmed to the Associated Press that she died at her Los Angeles home after a brief illness, although they did not disclose the specific cause of death.

In “Schitt’s Creek,” O’Hara was known for her portrayal of Moira Rose, the eccentric family matriarch, alongside co-stars Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, and Annie Murphy.

During a conversation with CBS Sunday Morning, Levy visited Goodwood, Ontario, the real-life location for the show’s fictional town. He expressed that O’Hara’s passing brought any sequel plans to an abrupt stop.

“No. We can’t,” Levy stated during the interview. “I was thinking about it, yeah.”

“It’s tough,” he said while getting emotional. “It’s tough going back.”

Levy had not returned to the town since filming wrapped for the final season that aired in 2020. The show won all seven major comedy awards at the Emmys for its sixth and final season.

The “Schitt’s Creek” creator also reflected on his memories with O’Hara, who played his mother on the show.

“We had the best time. She had the best time… It’s an amazing thing to be a part of something that she loved so much. You know, it feels very special. It’s what you have to hold onto, is the memories of it all,” he said.

O’Hara was a comedy movie icon, appearing in mockumentaries including “Best in Show” and “A Mighty Wind,” as well as the “Beetlejuice” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” films. She played the mother of Kevin McAlister (played by Macaulay Culkin) in the “Home Alone” franchise and portrayed Moira Rose in 80 episodes of “Schitt’s Creek.”
