Chicago-area immigration activity: Video shows federal agents break car window, detain occupants in Addison; protest held

In Addison, Illinois, a wave of protest swept through a section of Lake Street on Sunday. Earlier that day, a dramatic confrontation unfolded between federal agents and local residents after an agent shattered a car window to detain individuals within the vehicle. This incident sparked outrage, leading to a demonstration that drew considerable attention.

Demonstrators gathered along a block near La Huerta grocery store, the site where federal officers had detained at least two people. The tension in the air was palpable, as witnesses and protesters demanded answers from the authorities.

An employee from the grocery store managed to capture part of the unsettling scene on video. The footage showed federal agents forcibly detaining the vehicle’s occupants after the window was broken. As of now, the identities of those detained remain undisclosed, and it is unclear whether they face any charges, prompting news outlets such as ABC7 to blur their faces in broadcast footage.

Protester Maria Sinkule recounted the chaotic scene, noting, “There were about four, maybe five ICE vehicles parked in the lot.” Her account highlights the heavy presence of federal agents in the area, contributing to the community’s alarm and subsequent mobilization.

Sinkule, like many others present, questioned the legitimacy of the federal action. She stated, “They didn’t have a judicial warrant, no expedited removal order. They didn’t have any of that.” Her words echoed the broader concerns about due process and the authority under which the agents operated.

“They didn’t have a judicial warrant, no expedited removal order. They didn’t have any of that,” Sinkule said.

The driver of the vehicle was released after agents checked and confirmed her immigration status but this community was left shaken.

Sinkule later returned to the scene with dozens of others who stood outside the grocery store to show their support for La Huerta and to share their frustration over “Operation Midway Blitz.”

“This really impacts my community,” Sinkule said. “People are too scared to go to the store, my students are too scared to go to school.”

Allison Galvan is helping to mobilize and educate her community as a means of providing hope.

“There’s people I love and care about that are impacted by this. I am using my privilege of being a U.S.-born citizen, first-generation American, to be out here and fight for my people,” Galvan said. “We need to be educated, we need to support each other and that’s how were going to be able to get through this. There is always hope. There is always information and that’s how were going to get through this.”

Addison Mayor Tom Hundley issued a statement, saying in part, “Though our ability to intervene in federal matters is limited, I remain committed to ensuring that our Village continues to be a respectful and welcoming place for all.”

ABC7 Chicago has reached out to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for more on the Addison incident but did not receive a response.

DHS issues statement on Saturday’s operations in Chicago

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin issued a statement Sunday about a separate incident in Chicago, saying, “On October 25, 2025, Border Patrol conducted an operation that resulted in the arrest of, a criminal illegal alien from Mexico, who has previously been arrested for assault.

During the operations Border Patrol agents were surrounded and boxed in by a group of agitators. Federal law enforcement issued multiple lawful commands and verbal warnings, all of which were ignored. During the operation, two U.S. citizens were arrested for assaulting and impeding a federal officer. To safely clear the area after multiple warnings and the crowd continuing to advance on them, Border Patrol had to deploy crowd control measures.

“Our officers are facing a 1000% increase in assaults against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest murderers, rapists, abusers, and gang members. Secretary Noem’s message to the rioters is clear: you will not stop us or slow us down. ICE and our federal law enforcement partners will continue to enforce the law. And if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
