Fernandina Beach couple arrested after baby dies from possible fentanyl overdose

Melissa Sue Irons, 35, and Scott Alan Irons, 34, were taken into custody on drug-related charges following the death of their infant at a nearby hospital on Thursday, June 19.

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — Authorities have charged a couple from Fernandina Beach with drug possession following the death of their 5-month-old from a likely fentanyl overdose, according to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office’s announcement on Thursday.

Melissa Sue Irons, 35, and Scott Alan Irons, 34, were apprehended on charges of drug possession after their baby passed away at a local hospital on Thursday, June 19.

Investigators said deputies responded to a residence off South 6th Street in Fernandina Beach after a 911 call reporting an unresponsive infant. The 5-month-old later died at the hospital.

Once on the scene, the investigator found a powdery substance on a tray of the baby’s crib and drug paraphernalia around the house.

After executing a search warrant, investigators found a pouch of a purple substance, which tested positive for fentanyl, inside Melissa Irons’ bedroom drawer. Investigators also found a substance that tested positive for fentanyl inside Scott Irons’ wallet.

Both parents are facing charges of possession of a controlled substance and are booked in the Nassau County Jail & Detention Center.

Melissa Irons has a $15,000 bond and Scott Irons has a $25,000 bond.

Investigators said additional charges could be added pending the baby’s autopsy report.
