French School Riots Deepen as Experts Cite Far-Left Alliance

Analysts have blamed what they describe as an unlikely alliance between the extreme left and radical Islamist groups for helping intensify the violence that has spread across France.

The demonstrations began with complaints about school funding, overcrowded classrooms and poor facilities. Now entering their third week, the protests have grown more aggressive, prompting debate over whether the movement remains focused on education or has become part of a wider political confrontation.

Nathalie Szerman, a researcher specializing in radicalization and extremism in France at MEMRI, told News Outlet that the unrest initially appeared to emerge spontaneously in disadvantaged, immigrant-heavy suburbs around Paris. She said the demonstrations soon took on a more hostile tone, with violence directed at the broader “system” rather than solely at school conditions. Dozens of schools have reportedly been vandalized or blockaded, while others were set on fire.

Szerman noted that protests over school conditions at the start of France’s academic year are not unusual, but she said the size and increasingly political nature of the current demonstrations are cause for concern. She highlighted the presence of Palestinian flags and said pro-Palestinian groups, including Urgence Palestine, had designated October as a “month of revolt” and were backing the protests.

“At the center of this, I believe, is an effort by the far left and Islamists to join forces against France itself.”

Former U.S. Assistant Attorney General Theo Wold told News Outlet that France has a long history of strikes, labor disputes and street protests. He argued, however, that the current unrest is also connected to mass immigration, claiming that some rioters do not share France’s political culture or respect for the rule of law. Wold said the country was confronting the wider social consequences of failing to integrate an underclass of foreign-born residents.

Nile Gardiner, who leads The Heritage Foundation’s Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom, told Fox News’ Outnumbered that the unrest reflects cooperation between far-left activists and Islamist groups. He characterized the demonstrations as an uprising involving left-wing organizations and second- and third-generation migrants, while also pointing to France’s serious economic difficulties.

Simone Rodan-Benzaquen, a senior European envoy at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said students have legitimate grievances over packed classrooms and teachers who fail to appear. But she questioned the connection between the Gaza conflict and France’s shortage of educators. Rodan-Benzaquen argued that La France Insoumise, or LFI, has made opposition to Israel a central element of its appeal to younger voters, allowing the issue to enter the school protests and transform an education dispute into a broader and more divisive clash with the government.

Szerman described LFI as a prime example of what she called a “Red-Green alliance” between leftist and Islamist movements. In her view, the party brings together Islamist and pro-Palestinian organizations with anti-establishment French groups that accuse the wealthy elite of profiting at the expense of ordinary citizens. She characterized LFI as a revolutionary movement that uses Islam as a driving force, while politically active Muslims use the party to advance their own objectives.

According to Szerman, the two sides reinforce one another through a shared belief that they represent “the people.” That narrative casts the country’s governing elite as an enemy that must ultimately be removed, she said.

Rodan-Benzaquen said French families want teachers to attend classes and parents want schools to remain safe. She accused LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon of pursuing a much broader political goal, saying he is encouraging people to view schools as battlegrounds in a national struggle whose ultimate prize is the presidency.

French President Emmanuel Macron is barred from seeking a third consecutive term in the presidential election scheduled for this spring. As a result, political observers are increasingly considering a possible runoff between far-left leader Mélenchon and Marine Le Pen, the right-wing populist leader of the National Rally.

Rodan-Benzaquen said Mélenchon could gain politically regardless of how the unrest unfolds. If the protests push voters toward the right, he could position himself as the leading opposition figure. If he successfully mobilizes the left, he could move closer to the presidency. Either outcome, she argued, gives him little reason to ease tensions or encourage a rapid end to the confrontation.

Szerman said she does not believe LFI leaders deliberately set out to spark destructive protests nationwide. However, she argued that after the movement began, the party offered organizational support to the unrest and has been unwilling to condemn its followers when demonstrations turn violent.

So far, the protests have not spread across the continent even as spending on education seems close between countries.

According to the latest available figures from Eurostat, the European Union’s official statistical office, in 2024 France spent over 5% of its GDP on education, more than it spent on defense. In that same year, neighboring Germany spent only 4.5% of its GDP on education.

In Macron’s latest proposed budget, about $74 billion is earmarked for French schools, more than proposed for defense, but both are cuts from the last official budget narrowly approved by Parliament over the winter. Germany’s Federal Statistical Office reports spending on education was up to 7% of GDP at over $340 billion when including federal, state and local government spending. Meanwhile, in the U.K., Department for Education spending for the 2025/26 school year was estimated at around $142 billion.

When comparing the latest figures for expenditures per student, France’s ministry of education says in the 2024/25 school year, it spent $9,950 per student, Germany’s Federal Statistical Office says $12,000 was spent per student in 2025, and the U.K. spent about $10,100 per student in 2024/25. Meanwhile, the Organization for European Economic Co-operation says the Europe-wide average is around $12,000 per student per year.

Some 500 high schools are closed in France on Wednesday, down from 891 on Tuesday. The schools have been ordered by the ministry of education to replace normal lessons through Friday with structured dialogue and staff crisis management meetings in an effort to calm tensions, to avoid confrontations at school gates and to give staff time to reorganize.

The Associated Press reports more than 6,100 people have been arrested since the protests began, with the Interior Ministry saying 715 police officers have been injured.
