Devonte Deshawn Williams, 28, was arrested Tuesday after investigators say he exchanged gunfire with officers responding to the incident.

WAYCROSS, Ga. — A man is now facing multiple felony charges after investigators reported that he exchanged gunfire with police officers in Waycross on Monday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s announcement on Wednesday.

Devonte Deshawn Williams, 28, was arrested Tuesday after investigators say he shot into a vehicle carrying a two-year-old in Waycross Monday night.

According to GBI officials, Waycross Police Department officers were near Ketterer Street and N. Crawford Street around 9:30 p.m. when a white Chevrolet Equinox passed by. Investigators stated that the officers observed an individual, identified as Williams, standing in the road wearing a ski mask before opening fire on the vehicle.

The officers, who were in an unmarked patrol car, pursued the masked suspect and exchanged shots. However, investigators mentioned that the suspect fled into the woods.

GBI officials said investigators located the SUV involved in the shooting and discovered the occupants, who included a 2-year-old child, “played no part” in the incident.

Authorities later found Williams at his home, where he was taken into custody.

Investigators said Williams had suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound during the incident. He was taken to Waycross Memorial Hospital for medical care and has since been released.

No officers or civilians were injured in the shootings.

William faces three counts of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, three counts of aggravated assault, one count of first-degree cruelty to children, two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and six counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

He is currently being held at the Ware County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing. Once it is complete, the case will be handed over to the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review and potential prosecution, GBI officials said.
