Georgia mom Shumeka Johnson charged after daughter, 13, drove car that ran her over

In a troubling incident at a Georgia school, a mother was accidentally run over by her own 13-year-old daughter. Allegedly, the mother had allowed the teenager to take the wheel of her SUV during a morning school drop-off.

Shumeka Johnson, 35, now faces charges of reckless conduct following the early morning accident that occurred outside Brumby Elementary School in Cobb County, Georgia, as reported by Fox 5 Atlanta, citing the Cobb Police Department.

Authorities revealed that the incident involved Johnson’s teenage daughter operating a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica in the school’s drop-off lane. At the time, a 4-year-old boy and a 6-month-old girl were also passengers in the vehicle.

Unexpectedly, the SUV surged forward, striking Johnson, who was positioned in front of the vehicle. Police reported that the SUV eventually stopped with Johnson trapped beneath it.

In a frantic attempt to rectify the situation, the daughter reversed the vehicle, unintentionally crashing into a parked car that was thankfully unoccupied, according to officials.

Johnson sustained severe injuries as a result of the accident and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

She allegedly allowed her 13-year-old daughter to operate the vehicle, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by East Cobb News.

Police said that Johnson “did endanger the bodily safety” of the child driver, particularly because “the vehicle did not have an adult inside.”

The affidavit also alleged that Johnson engaged in reckless conduct “by consciously disregarding a substantial and unjustifiable risk that her act or omission would endanger the safety of said person and such disregard constituted a gross deviation from the standard of care which a reasonable person would have exercised in the situation.”

A criminal warrant for Johnson’s arrest was issued June 3.

Cobb County Magistrate Court Judge Charles Chesbro found probable cause for the charge and signed the warrant, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. Johnson’s bond was set at $300.

A GoFundMe created by friend Angel Makey to cover medical costs and childcare describes Johnson as “a devoted wife and mother of five” and a self-employed stylist.

The fundraiser says the crash left Johnson with injuries requiring “several ongoing surgeries” and that she now faces “the challenge of learning to walk again.”

“With a newborn daughter just six months old, Shumeka’s recovery is even more demanding, and she is unable to work during this difficult time,” the fundraiser adds.

The crowdfunding page had raised roughly $1,800 toward its $5,000 goal as of Thursday morning.
